Hi, Gerald,

It is clear that privacy and security concerns impact use of social media in both government and business -- especially in highly regulated industries, such as financial services, utilities and healthcare. It will be interesting to see whether consumers partition their data in such a way that they maintain the ability to interact with companies in large social media, such as Facebook or Twitter, while securing their most private data in places like paid photo sharing utilities.

Excellent point Chris. I would probably join that movement as well and I see the opportunity for new web apps. Do you see a major impact on the adoption of SM in the business community and the government space? I realize that both communities are very concerned about security and privacy. Will this affect their adoption and use?
Gerald

[...] I recently described a use case for companies to use emerging text data mining technologies with social media listening tools to empower retail employees to meet the information needs of their customers who are getting smarter and smarter. That use case can also be applied in the form of a kiosk within lower-touch retail environments such as Sam’s Club or Wal-Mart, where consumers might appreciate the ability to quickly research the products on the shelf at that instant.
Interesting and well-written article. This makes perfect sense. Scaling social media often requires mobilizing and empowering lots of people. Policies help to empower those people while also creating appropriate accountability. Unfortunately, most organizations’ policies simply mitigate risk. Social media policies can be important enablers of social media operations at scale by helping to provide the right levels of empowerment with accountability for business results. As organizations realize the role that social media policies can play in scaling social media operations, more and more organizations will evolve toward guidelines that differentiate, rather than simply mitigate.

Julienne

Yes, and another growing problem: more companies/workplaces are simply blocking employee access to social media apps across the board. There's a helpful whitepaper on the subject, it's called “To Block or Not. Is that the question?”

http://bit.ly/9f8WOT

It has lots of insightful and useful information about identifying and controlling Enterprise 2.0 apps (Facebook, Twitter, Skype, SharePoint, etc.)

Blocking shouldn't have to be an "all or nothing" proposition, and it certainly shouldn't be done out of fear or misunderstanding of the risks.

This sounds impressive Chris. Viewed demos and asked for white paper. Do you have a sense of complexity, time, expense of integration?
Thanks,
Gerald
