Governance = High-Quality Decisions, Made Quickly, That Stick

When people ask me,”What is Social Media Governance”, I like to use the definition of governance from my colleague Patrick Mosher, a Senior Executive at Accenture [1] who says:

Governance is the ability to:

  1. Make high-quality decisions
  2. Make them quickly
  3. And make them stick

In my opinion, organizations achieve those abilities through shaping their people, processes and technologies to ensure the right balance of empowerment with accountabilityTM.

Social Media Governance helps organizations achieve those abilities by proactively managing the People, Processes, Metrics and Policies required for social media success. For example, new social utilities emerge all the time, and organizations have to decide how to allocate marketing, sales, support and technology resources to those tools. If you have a clear vision for the skills of your People, the business Processes you intend to support, the Metrics that define success, and Policies in place that help you use social media at scale, then you can quickly prioritize new social media investments and take action.

Patrick has years of experience managing very large scale transformation efforts, and I appreciate his sharing with me and all of you.
